4 Ways To Keep Your Eyes Healthy

When it comes to health, many people think about exercising, wearing sunscreen, getting regular checkups, etc., but they may forget about their eyes. Things you can do to keep your eyes healthy include seeing your eye doctor regularly, eating healthy, cleaning your face at night, and more.

Eating For Healthy Eyes

Eating healthy is not only for your body, but also for your eyes. Leafy greens are packed with zeaxanthin and lutein, which have antioxidants. Studies show that these antioxidants can lower your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Egg yolks and almonds are another source of zeaxanthin and lutein.

The vitamin C found in citrus and berries are also healthy for your eyes. Fatty fish, such as trout, anchovies, mackerel, and salmon, are rich in DHA, which is a fatty acid that is found in your retinas. They have been found to help with dry eye syndrome.

Removing Makeup

When you go to bed with your makeup on, it is not only bad for your skin, but for your eyes too. Loss of eyelashes, dry eyes, allergic reactions, and bacterial infections can occur if you do not remove your make up and it builds up. Wash your face each night before you go to bed, and make sure you remove eyeliner, mascara, and eye shadow.

If you are out of makeup remover, you can use avocado. Open a fresh avocado, and scoop out the inside. Rub this on your face, and then wipe with a soft wet cloth. Vitamins A and E, as well as the omega-3 fatty acids found in avocado work great as a moisture cream for your eyes. You can purchase avocado moisture cream at many retail stores, or you can purchase avocado oil for this purpose.

Walk Away From The Computer

If you sit in front of a computer much of the day, you can develop computer vision syndrome and eye strain. Walk away every 30 minutes or so. If you cannot get up and walk, close your eyes for a few minutes, or look away from the screen. You can also blink frequently to keep your eyes moist, and make sure the monitor is 20 to 28 inches away.

See Your Eye Doctor

The best thing you can do for your eyes is to see your eye doctor regularly. They will do a vision screening that tests your vision, as well as an eye exam that checks for your overall eye health and acuity.

Tell the doctor if you sit in front of a computer all day, and they can prescribe computer glasses for you to wear while working.

You should also always wear protective glasses when playing sports, and wear sunglasses with UV protection when you are outside in the sun.
