What To Expect From A Substance Abuse Program

Admitting that you need substance abuse therapy is a big step. Once you realize that you need help you are halfway to getting back to a normal life. However, if this is your first time in rehab you may be feeling apprehensive and nervous. You are probably not sure what to expect. Here's an overview of what will happen when you are admitted to a substance abuse rehab program.

The Check-In Process

When you check in you will be interviewed. The information that you give will be used to form a specialized treatment program for you. It is likely that the program coordinators will want you to stay for 30 to 90 days depending on the severity of your addiction.

The Detoxification Begins

Once the check-in process is finished the detoxification process will begin. During the detoxification process, the drugs will be removed from your body. This is probably one of the most difficult parts of the entire process. However, while it is the most difficult, it is probably one of the most important. This is because your body needs to be cleansed of the substances that you are abusing so that you will be in the best mental and physical shape to go through the entire rehab process.

Detoxification can take three days to as long as two weeks. Depending on the substance you have been abusing medication may be administered to help make the withdrawal symptoms less severe.

Therapy Begins

Once the detoxification phase is over it is time for the therapy phase of your program to begin. Many different types of therapy will be used to help you overcome your addiction and get you prepared to live a drug-free life.

You are likely to go through individual therapy for your addiction. During this time you will work one-on-one with a trained professional to look at your addiction and its causes. You will also figure out how you can avoid relapsing.

In some instances, you may also go through group therapy so that you can get support from those who are going through the same process as yourself. Family therapy is also an important part of the rehab process. This is because when someone is an addict it not only affects them but their family members as well.

Be Patient

As you can see there are several stages that you need to go through in order to be free of substance abuse. Remember that rehabilitation from substance abuse is an ongoing process. Be patient with yourself as it will take time to get over your addiction. For more information, contact a service that offers substance abuse rehab programs.
